In the Summer of 2021, Dowally were delighted to be asked to compose and record an archive film soundtrack. The project, commissioned by City of Edinburgh Council and produced by Cinescapes, was named 'ReDrawing Edinburgh'. Its aim was to signify 100 years since Edinburgh’s boundaries widened to encompass Cramond, Liberton, Colinton, Corstorphine and - controversially - Leith. The archive footage came mainly from the National Library of Scotland's Moving Image Archive, as well as from members of the public. To write music for archive film had always been an ambition of the band and the work was a joy to create. The resulting film was projected onto walls in public spaces across Edinburgh in September 2021, with each of the 5 locations which were swallowed up by the expanding boundary hosting a community screening. We all marvelled and reflected as precious film footage from 1920 onwards played out before us, showing people, places, transport, families, community.
After the film events wrapped up, we re-listened to the soundtrack as a collection of compositions and tunes in its own right. For us, the music holds its own, and we hope you feel the same!
It was a pleasure to work on this commission with Producer/Editor Amanda Rogers (Cinescapes), researcher Amaya Bañuelos Marco and script writer Alistair Rutherford. We recorded the music in Chamber Studio with one of our favourite engineers, Graeme Young, and had the honour of having Norman Mackay lend not just his beautiful accordion playing, but also a tune of his.
